Everyone probably has used a peeling before or even had a professional peeling done. But what exactly means “peeling” and why is it so essential to have it done on a regular basis? The word “peel” comes from the English language and means “peel off” or “scrubbing”. In cosmetics, the word “exfoliation” or “peel” is often used.
Why we should use peelings
The aim of a peeling is the removal of dead skin cells. With a peeling, the complexion is refined and cell renewal is stimulated. Afterwards, the skin feels smooth and soft and looks radiant thanks to the increased blood circulation. Additionally, the skin is deeply cleansed which means that sebum-clogged pores are purified. Moreover, care products can be absorbed much better and the skin tans faster and more even.
Different forms of peelings
There are different forms of exfoliation, starting with gentle mechanical peelings up to aggressive chemical peelings. It is differentiated between peelings for the use at home, the beauty salon and the medical clinic.
Mechanical Peeling
The lightest form of exfoliation is the mechanical peeling as it only acts on the surface. This is the most common application for the use at home. Dead skin cells are removed with an abrasive such as fruit seeds, bamboo granulates or similar. However, these peelings should not be applied too frequently as the skin may react with irritations such as redness, impurities or extreme dryness. In general, this form of exfoliation is not the best solution for all skin types.
Enzyme Peeling
In case of very sensitive or extremely impure skin, it is better to work with enzyme peelings. Here, old cornification is removed from the skin due to the activity of several enzymes. Though this form of exfoliation is considered a peeling of the surface, it is more intense but still gentle as irritation of the skin through scrubbing as with mechanical peelings does not apply. This is very essential for sensitive, reddened and irritated skin. In case of impure skin, spreading the infections can thus be avoided, and this is usually the trigger for the formation of new impurities. Nowadays, there are also enzyme peelings for the use at home.
Fruit acid peelings work a bit deeper. These exfoliants belong to the medium peelings (but still on the surface) which are carried out at a beauty salon or by a dermatologist. Aestheticians may only apply fruit acid peelings with an acid content of 20%, above 20% may only be conducted by a dermatologist.
Chemical Peeling
The strongest form of exfoliation is the chemical peeling. It reflects one of the deepest peelings and should only be carried out by trained experts. Chemical peels burn the skin and is thus a very aggressive method with a long curing period.
Green Peel® Kräuterschälkur
Much more gentle but also very effective are herbal peelings, such as our GREEN PEEL®, which peel the skin in a natural way. With this treatment, herbs are massaged into the skin and thus ensure that the skin renews within 5 days, instead of 28 days.
